Tweaking the Rules...it's what we do
Managed to get in a couple of games of Kill Team with Ron this past Friday (7/19/2019). It's been a few weeks since the last time we got together. We spent a lot of time discussing rules and made some modifications but decided to go ahead and play a round of games that counted towards the league standings. The main change to the rules was we decided to allow for reactions to reactions. We introduced command points before our last game which means we roll a 1D6 for each turn and that's the amount of reactions that can be done per turn. During an opponent's turn, if an action is performed, a model that sees that action may perform a reaction for 1 CP. When we introduced it, we limited it to a single action and their could be no "reaction to the reaction" part. This time, we added that you could react to a reaction and included that any of your models could do an action regardless if they saw the original reaction. Very much like Space Hulk (or exactly like it) assuming everyone has comms and can tell their buddies to do an action.
It certainly made a difference with practically an entire game being played in the first turn of our first game. We both ended up having 6 CPs that turn so had a lot to work with. We moved and shot almost every model just based off one model moving. The game ended up being a draw with both of us accomplishing our mission. The second game was a win for Ron. It should have been a draw but the model I was supposed to kill wouldn't die, no matter how many times I hit it. The dice were not with me at all! All in all enjoyable games but we decided to eliminate the reaction to reaction thing. That is pretty much a game changer. We are also revisiting the mechanic for determining flesh wounds and out right kills. Sigh...
It will be a few weeks before we can get together again due to life stuff and all. I haven't really had much chance to lay paint on some models either lately...and that's mainly due to getting some games in of D&D with my daughter and another friend as well as binging on Netflix shows (Stranger Things Season 3!). Gotta figure out a better schedule to get things done!
Summer League Stats:
Ron: 2 Wins
Me: 0 Wins

Action - Reaction/Counter mechanics can make for a great game, but bolted onto a system that hadn't been designed with that in mind is a big ask. My favorite system Rogue Planet has the mechanism baked in and it works a treat. Recently I have been reading about SLA Industries Canibal Sector 1 which feels a little more like KT but with Command Points being earned during the game, that can be used for Reactions amongst others things. Maybe worth checking out.
ReplyDeleteI will check those out and see what we can use from them. Thanks for the tips!
