Getting Ready For Summer League 2020!

Image taken from https://www.frontlinegaming.org/2018/04/27/cheap-and-easy-diy-terrain/

Ron gave me a board of insulation to use for terrain so I thought I'd use it to make a new terrain board along with other terrain pieces.

Since our games of Kill Team and now Apoc are all played on a 2'x3' board, I used that to form the base of the board.  Then took chunks, carved them up to make hills and used hot glue to glue them all in place.  I wanted to create some water terrain as well so I used a creme brulee burner (outside!) and created a stream as well as a sunken area on one of the hills.  First time doing that so it was a bit of a learning process.  Plus I ended up burning through a little on some areas of the stream (more on that later).  Then I used sculptamold (great stuff!) to smooth everything out and create the "ground."

For this initial part, I didn't take any photos...my bad.  But here is a photo after all the above was done.

I noticed a few tiny holes along the streambed so I filled in those areas with sculptamold.

So I let it dry then set off to paint the terrain brown overall.  I then dry brushed the stream bed and flocked everything.  I then added the water effects.

Then I waited for the water effects to dry.  Lesson learned here is that sculptamold makes for a very crappy seal!  So I discovered it dripping out very slowly onto the floor.  A bit of a scramble to patch the underside with putty this time, clean up the resin that had dripped onto the floor and to take being laughed at by my wife (I have a record of unsuccessfully applying water effects to the detriment to the house!).  It took FOREVER to dry (like days) before I could move on.

After spraying some terrain glue over everything and letting that dry, the board is ready.

Another lesson learned is the sculptamolded sections of the stream bed didn't interact so well with the water effects.  Even though these areas were painted and dry brushed like the rest of the bed, those sections turned a milky white instead of remaining clear.  Oh well...I will chalk it up to chemical spills!

Yesterday, with the remaining pieces of the insulation, I made some hills to be used as area terrain on another board.  Once I am finished with these, I will update this post.

Cut and carved and ready to have sculptamold slathered on them!
Waiting to dry.

I went on to finish another container similar to the yellow one pictured above in the lower right corner.

Finished with the above terrain pieces.

While it is finished, I am going to take the opportunity to add some graffiti to this one....fingers crossed!

UPDATE (5/10/2020):

I managed to get some graffiti onto the container using an airbrush.  While definitely not the level of some of the real tags out there, I think it came out ok.

And because the timeline for getting back together to get games in is a bit fuzzy, I've continued working on more terrain pieces.  Working on some blocking terrain.
