Our first game of Warhammer 40k Kill Team!

We played the new version of Kill Team today.  Since my friend, Ron, and I are pretty much of the same mind when it comes to games we were pretty stoked to get our hands on the game and give it a go.  We both like small model counts and fast paced games with a limited amount of rules. Based on all the buzz surrounding this game before its' release, we knew this would be a good fit for us.

We just got the rule book and not the boxed set so Ron made some tokens to use to mark the various actions a model can take (ready, move, advance, charge, fired, etc).  For flesh wounds, we just used dice.  We also used some old tokens I had made for regular 40k games to mark a model as shaken.

So I took 7 models from my Imperial Fists 5th Company Detachment and he used 6 of his Harlequin models.  My point cost ended up being 95 but we weren't counting points just yet so I didn't record his point value.

Since today was the first day we actually saw the rules, we opted to keep it simple and just play a straight, "go kill the other team" mode of play.  No command points, specialist rules, etc.  Move, Shoot, Close Combat, Check Moral (neither of us had a psycher).  We started out slow but by the end we had the mechanics for each phase down pretty good and were moving at a pretty good clip.

My Thoughts on the Game
The game is as advertised; easy to learn, fast and pretty dang fun.  Adding the the additional mechanics (specialists, command points, etc) into our next game will definitely add more fun to the game as well.  Overall the game is a blast and I highly recommend it...there are just a few downsides, however (in my opinion):

  • There is no index in the rule book.  Not a show stopper but I thought GW finally got the hint that this is a useful thing to have in their rule books!
  • This may change but I thought you could take pretty much any model type in your kill teams.  There are only 4 model types you can use when you play Adeptus Astartes teams and I don't have 2 of them so I (right now) am limited to scouts and tactical marines.  And, because of this, 3 of the 6 tactic cards are useless to me.
  • There is an additional tactic that is useless to me because it is only good against a specific army which Ron doesn't play nor does anyone I know.  Maybe add an additional tactic for every army specific tactic would balance this out.
Even so, I thoroughly enjoyed how the game played and am looking forward to our next one!  One of the main reasons I stopped playing "normal" 40k was the amount of crap you had to haul around so the fact that you can travel to a place with a small box containing your team, rule book and and other items is a huge bonus for me!

  1. Good looking board you have got there. How is the KT gaming going a few months later? Still strong?

  2. @Dutch_Law - so sorry for the delay in responding. For various reasons I sort of fell off the blog wagon and missed it. I am (trying) to pick it back up. Not sure you will see this due to the time gap but thought it was worth the try. KT gaming has gone very strong and we just wrapped up our "Winter League" and about to start the summer version at my place (see latest post). Cheers!
